How Long Does a Vape Battery Last?

July 29, 2021

As a vaper, there’s nothing more annoying than a dead battery. It makes your device useless when you’re craving a hit.

We know that your battery won’t last forever. But, it should give you more than a couple of hits before dying.

Does it seem like your battery is dying way too quickly? Wondering how long it should last?

This guide is for you. We discuss everything you need to know about your vape battery life. This includes the different types, average lifespan, and how to make your battery life last longer.

Keep reading to learn more.

What Are the Different Types of Vape Batteries?

There are two main types of vape batteries. Let’s take a closer look at each one:

Integrated Batteries

As you might’ve guessed, these batteries come integrated into your vaping device. You cannot remove them.

When it’s charging time, you must charge the device via an on-board USB port. Usually, you can continue to use your device while it’s charging.

Note that vapes with integrated batteries are more popular. Despite not being as powerful, they are easier for people to use as you don’t have to mess around with mods.

Removable Batteries

Removable batteries are ideal if you use mods or want more power. They are interchangeable, meaning you can take them in and out of your device.

In some cases, you can charge them within your device via an on-board USB port. But, it’s best to remove them and power them with an external charger.

Removable batteries are great for many reasons. For instance, you can start the day off with a fully charged one in your device. Once it dies, you can replace it with a backup. This prevents you from finding a port and waiting for it to charge in the middle of the day.

When shopping for removable batteries, you’ll notice that they are many different kinds. They have names featuring many letters and numbers.

You should know that these letters and numbers aren’t random. They give you some important info. Let’s use the 18650 2100mAh IMR as an example.

The first two numbers refer to the diameter of the battery. So, in this case, the diameter is 18 mm. The next three numbers (650) indicate length in millimeters.

The “2100mAh” refers to milliampere-hour—more on what that means later.

And, finally, the letters at the end refer to the chemical makeup.

  • I stands for Lithium-Ion, which has a high nominal voltage output and high energy density.
  • M stands for Manganese and indicates low internal cell resistance.
  • R stands for round or rechargeable.

Other common letters you might see include:

  • Fe. Also known as iron, Fe can withstand long storage times at full voltage.
  • Ni. Ni stands for nickel and acts as an effective heating coil.
  • C. C stands for cobalt and offers a high energy density and long lifespan.

Voltage and mAh Explained

Voltage and mAh are two important specs to be aware of. Let’s take a closer look:

Voltage

The voltage of your vape will determine how much it can put out at once. A higher voltage will have a higher vapor output. A lower voltage will have a lower vapor output. Voltages tend to range from 3.3V-4.8V.

Some batteries come with a fixed voltage. This means that you have no control over the output.

Other batteries, however, come with variable voltage. You can adjust the settings to control the output.

mAh

mAh stands for milliampere-hour. In simple terms, it measures how long your battery will last before it needs to be recharged.

Sticking with the example we used earlier, the 18650 2100mAh IMR has a mAh of 2100. This means that it can supply 2.1 amps for an hour.

Typically, the bigger the mAh rating, the longer it will last. mAh ratings can vary from 280-900 mah, but 300 mAh should be more than enough to last you through the day.

What Is the Average Lifespan of a Vape Battery?

One full charge can last you up to 300 puffs or so. It might be less if you have it set to high voltage or are taking multiple hits over a short period.

If you take good care of your battery, you can use it for 2-3 years before replacing it.

How Can I Make My Vape Battery Last Longer?

Here are some tips for making your vape battery last longer:

  • Use a high-quality charger
  • Avoid chain vaping
  • Only charge your battery when it’s below 50%
  • Turn off your device when you’re not using it
  • Store rechargeable batteries in a safe place

The Bottom Line

The lifespan of vape batteries will vary depending on several factors. As long as you use them as intended for use, they should last quite a while.
